Cast History

In February 2023, The Art Theatre of Long Beach and its previous Rocky Horror Shadow Cast parted ways, leaving a vacancy on their stage. After screening the film once without any performers Kennedy Ghaill, the theatre programmer, coordinated a second viewing in the fall with the infamous pre-show ritual featuring a limited cast. In the winter of 2023 the Theatre began to lay the groundwork for a new troupe.

In March 2024 a new, unnamed, in-house shadow cast brought together veteran performers, guests from other regional casts, theater staff, and total newcomers. They put on a show with a shoestring budget. The props and costuming consisted of a blow-up pool tank, a popcorn bucket helmet for Eddie, and a golden cape for Columbia, but they were still able to produce a great show where an audience member asked how to join.

The next month they performed a second time with their new moniker: Bit of Mustard. The supportive cast, crew, and theatre staff began to grow in numbers and prop size. Their pool tank is now a more realistic version of the films original rainbow tank and Columbia gained a sparkly jacket, but the core of what Bit of Mustard strives to be will always remain the same. A place where anyone can not only dream it, but be it on stage or behind the scenes.

Friends, friends of friends, and audience members alike have since joined Bit of Mustard. This cast was founded to foster a safe community where members could have a fun, enriching experience without fear of dis-CRIM-ination.

Bit of Mustard likes to make cartoonish fun of the movie instead of maintaining total screen accuracy. There have been alternate takes on the film’s costumes and cast members have been allowed to perform their interpretations of the characters. This ensures that performing is inclusive for everyone.

Themed shows such as Pride and ’80s Night gave performers a creative opportunity with their wardrobe. They’ve also made an effort to make the crew accessible by ensuring that everyone has a role to play on and off stage.

As they say, don’t get hot and flustered; come see Bit of Mustard every last Saturday of the month!
